This past Sunday was our first brunch event. At The Spice Club we’re all about opening peoples eyes to home-made Indian food and showcasing the true variety of the Indian cuisine. We have received some great feedback from our dinner events and so I thought it could be a lovely idea to showcase some authentic Indian breakfast and lunch specialties that I grew up eating using recipes that have been passed down in my family for years.
When I posted up the event, spaces quickly began filling up and I took reservations from past and new guests alike….before we knew it we were cooking for twenty!
It was a beautifully, hot day on Sunday and we got the ball rolling by serving a refreshing sweet lassi with crushed ice and a hint of basil for the welcome drink. For the entrees, we served Punjabi Channa, Sukhi Aloo Sabji and Kheera Raita.
All entrees were served with a selection of hot fresh traditional Indian breads including chappatis, dal stuffed parathas, paneer stuffed parathas and puris.
The food went out and before I could even introduce the dishes, our guests started chowing down. The entrees went down really well and the hot breads seemed to disappear off the plates within seconds of being served-the hot puffed puris being a favourite I believe! (Shown above).
For dessert, we served Halwa which is a traditional Indian pudding made from semolina. All Indian (Punjabi) children grow up on this and it is loved all round. It’s also considered an auspicious dessert as it’s traditionally served in temples and is given as a blessing. It’s personally one of my favourite sweet dishes so thought it could really work on the brunch menu. I had no idea how it would go down but I think the empty dessert glasses and smiles spoke for themselves 🙂
Thank you to all of our lovely guests who joined us-it was great to see some familiar and new faces! We had a blast and received some lovely reviews and tweets afterwards. To see all of the photos from the brunch, visit: http://on.fb.me/kSen7L.
